On the top of shady laurel Parnassus, Apollo fell on a cloud. To his right, a winged spirit (Music) brings him the lyre. A naked woman, personifying both the Spring and Melody offer her flowers. Beside her, Urania, draped in blue, holds a scroll in his hand and personifies Harmony supporting Melody. A young man, the torch in his left hand, looks and drinks water of Hippocrene. This is both the poet and the musician s'abreuvant sources of Parnassus. At left, presents the Love Apollo crown offered him by the Three Graces naked. Sketch for the composition decorating the tympanum of the side show is the grand foyer of the Paris Opera. Delaunay is the author of four compositions decorating this very room. Barrias realized the composition of the western area and Baudry entire central portion.
