Victor Hugo seated, leaning on the left arm a copy of Homer on a table, his right hand slipped into the jacket.
Letters of Juliette Drouet to Victor Hugo mention day to day, the sittings at Leon Bonnat for the realization of this portrait, often in competition with the sessions of the Senate. These appear to have started shortly after the return of Guernsey and Avenue installing Eyleau (10/11 November 1878), since 30 Juliet wrote: "I am glad that you feel a little free now, free Bonnat and Senate [...]. " It then reports the sessions on December 1, a likely 5 and 7, 10, another possible 14, then 28 and finally 4 January 1879. The portrait was then exposed to 1879 living under number "340 - Victor Hugo Portrait". After the death of Victor Hugo, the painting belonged to Jeanne Hugo, granddaughter of the poet. In 1903, for the opening of the Maison de Victor Hugo, Paul Meurice in order copy to Léon Bonnat who executed by his pupil Daniel Saubès. By letter dated March 26, 1903 Daniel Paul Meurice Saubès announcement that the painting is completed and gives proof of payment of 2000 francs, May 2, 1903 (archives of the museum). Leon Bonnat approved the copy shop in there apposnat his monogram. In 1919, Jeanne-Negreponte Hugo made a donation to the State subject to usufruct of the original version. Entered the Louvre in 1943, she was assigned in 1948 to the National Museum of the Palaces of Versailles and Trianon.
