J. Ottis Adams blev født i Amity, Indiana og bosatte sig med sin familie i Shelbyville, Indiana. Den unge Adams var fascineret af kunst og brugte meget af sin tid på at tegne. Han meldte sig ind på Wabash College, men forlod et år senere for at studere kunst på South Kensington School i London, hvor han kom under indflydelse af John Constable og Joseph Mallord William Turner, hvis landskaber var af særlig interesse for Adams. Late Autumn conveys a misty November morning near the banks of the Whitewater not far from Adams’s Brookville home. The painting was purchased from the Eleventh Annual Exhibition of the Society of Western Artists. The Society held annual exhibitions until 1914 at six Midwestern cities. The John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, was the Indianapolis venue for the Society’s exhibitions. Many works by Midwestern artists, including Late Autumn were acquired from the museum’s contemporary collection from these exhibitions.
