Melchior d'Hondecoeter er den bedst kendte fuglemaler i det 17. århundrede. Han bragte genren til store højder. Han portrætterede fugle fra hele verden med en stor følsomhed for detaljer, farver og animation: kylling, bøjle eller papegøje, han observerede dem alle lige nøje. Denne olieskitse af kyllinger giver en unik indsigt i D'Hondecoeters arbejdspraksis.
